ChatGPT And AI: Useful Tools For HR – Not A Replacement For It

There has been much to say lately about ChatGPT and AI in the business world. Technology is contributing to the advancement and change of the business landscape in many successful ways. There’s little doubt that both are valuable tools for our toolkits, but when it comes to human resources, business leaders would be wise not to consider either of these as the long-term HR strategy.

If you think about what HR is, at its simplest form it’s the function of overseeing all things related to the people who do the work at a company. Traditionally, HR was responsible for ensuring the transactional activities required to hire and maintain employees were handled. As the work landscape has changed, so has HR’s role in business.

HR, at least in strategic, goal-oriented companies is responsible for aligning the people policies, processes, and practices to the organizational goals

Sure, HR is still responsible for oversight of the transactional side of HR, but many of those processes have been automated for years. Most organizations have HRIS, applicant tracking and payroll systems that interact with one another to maintain the employee’s records for their employment lifecycle.

When we think about HR today, we think about important priorities such as attracting quality hires, creating inclusive and engaging cultures, developing future leaders through robust succession planning, and coaching employees to drive high-performance, which results in financial success.

ChatGPT and AI are great for simple HR needs, for example drafting a job description, completing initial candidate screenings, creating a seamless onboarding process, or pulling data to prepare a training program, but they don’t have human reasoning capabilities that are required to build and maintain impactful people programs. They can’t look at all sides of a situation and make informed decisions based on what is good and right or what precedents have been established. They can’t consider how employment laws have been interpreted and apply that to a company’s unique situation.

With the talent challenges organizations face, ChatGPT and AI should be seen as a resource to free up time so leaders can spend more of it on the people

It should not and cannot be used to replace the ‘human’ in human resources.

Living and doing business just 10 miles from Blacksburg, Virginia where Virginia Tech sits, our region benefits greatly from the university. One of those benefits is the brilliant minds who graduate and opt to start their own business or join another local fellow alumni founded company, all in the pursuit of staying local to the beautiful New River Valley.

It’s remarkable how many small to medium-sized Hokie founded companies are thriving in our community, and many of these successful companies are leveraging ChatGPT and AI to help with HR. It makes sense because they don’t need a full-service HR department; but as they think about their people priorities, Ignite Leadership & HR Consulting Group is proud to be the local HR consulting resource. Whether for a one-time project, such as creating an employee handbook, recruiting and hiring their first employee, or being their go-to expert for employee relations issues, and employee engagement strategies we’re proud to be the Talent Solutions expert for the NRV.

For those small-medium sized companies who do not need a full HR department, Ignite Leadership & HR Consulting Group LLC is a great resource to have as a partner who specializes in taking care of the people.
